We look for places that are worth the extra mile

Okapi Compass began with a simple conviction: the places that stay with us most are rarely the most visible ones.

Founded by Valentin and Lisa, the project grew from years of travel shaped by the same instinct.

That instinct was to look beyond mass tourism, beyond “must-see” lists, and beyond places made famous by exposure alone. Since meeting in 2019, we’ve been drawn to locations that ask for something more: more attention, more curiosity, and often a little more effort to reach.

Over time, one pattern became impossible to ignore. The places that stayed with us most were usually the quietest ones. Not by chance, but because something protected them.

Sometimes it was access. Sometimes it was context. Sometimes it was simply the fact that they had not yet been pushed into visibility.

We kept asking the same question: why is there no platform built around exactly that idea?

Most travel platforms help people find what is already visible.

Okapi Compass was created around a different question: what makes a place worth finding and sharing carefully?

It is not a traditional travel guide. There are no viral hotspots, no “top 10” rankings, and no pressure to perform travel for display. Instead, Okapi Compass is a curated, community-driven collection of places that remain special because reaching them still asks for some time, attention, or effort.

Today, as a small family with our daughter Kiana and our former street dog Tosca, we continue to look for places that still feel like themselves: calm, grounded, and worth the extra mile.

Okapi Compass is our attempt to build a living platform around that idea. It is a place for discovery, inspiration, and meaningful exchange.
